My name is Sarah and I'm a once-skinny-kid macaroni-eating-swimmer now dangerously turned on to CrossFit, Paleo nutrition and overall badass-ness.

I am training as a first time participant for CrossFit's 2011 Sectional Qualifier and, through this, hope to increase my physical strength and (otherwise absent) mental fortitude. No more frustration during WODs. No more "I can't". I will stop being good at one thing, and become great at everything.

                              CAN CUTTING CARBOHYDRATES FROM YOUR DIET MAKE YOU LIVE LONGER?
                                             
You must visit the above link. It is easily one of the BEST articles I’ve found illustrating scientific evidence related to the benefits of a low-carb diet (i.e., eliminating processed carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, etc). 

Some of the highlights? Oh, you know.. living longer.. 

Yes, you read that correctly. Maintaining a low-carb diet, or, as I will state from now on (so nobody takes it the wrong way), ELIMINATING BREAD, PASTA, AND PROCESSED GARBAGE, will make you live longer.

How?

According to the article, this diet “turned down the gene that controls insulin, which in turn switched on another gene, which acted like an elixir of life.” 

We know that carbohydrates activate an insulin response. That would mean eating a lot of carbohydrates (or simply eating bread, pasta, etc, on a daily basis) would create an insulin response on overdrive, leading to the over production of insulin, leading to insulin resistance, diabetes, etc. The study suggests that this process (even when you’re not necessarily diabetic or insulin resistant) negatively effects the activation of a gene necessary for a variety of repair functions, such as skin and muscle cell growth, immunity, etc. Additionally, it may also trigger an increase in cholesterol production in the liver, which will then cause our blood vessel walls to contract, which will then cause our blood pressure to go up, which will stimulate the release of fats called triglycerides, which is linked to heart disease.
