SARAH GETS STRONG: A CROSSFIT/PALEO LOVE AFFAIR *

My name is Sarah and I'm a once-skinny-kid macaroni-eating-swimmer now dangerously turned on to CrossFit, Paleo nutrition and overall badass-ness.

I am training as a first time participant for CrossFit's 2011 Sectional Qualifier and, through this, hope to increase my physical strength and (otherwise absent) mental fortitude. No more frustration during WODs. No more "I can't". I will stop being good at one thing, and become great at everything.

Join me on my journey to greatness!

Physically, it’s happening; Mentally, it’s, uh.. well..

…it’s not happening. It’s JUST not happening.

Is there a way to build mental strength and focus like there is for physical strength? Why are clean and jerk 1RM’s so mind blowing to me that I consistently psyche myself out!?

This madness has got to stop.

Thing is, I’ve been feeling superbly strong lately— hitting a heavy deadlift WOD, a 3RM front-squat of 140lbs (holler!), 100 burpees with a 20lb weight vest— hell, even my THRUSTERS have been feeling great. THRUSTERS! So, then, where is this mental illness with heavy clean and jerks coming from?

Karrah tells me to get it together after my 130lb clean & jerk disaster

On two different occasions, now, I walk up to the loaded bar with a twisted stomach and questionable mindset.
Destructive force #1.
My hands go on the bar and the mind-talk begins. “I can do this. I can do this. I can.. right?” Seed of doubt has been planted.
Destructive force #2.
Big pull. Feels heavy. Too heavy. I can’t do this.
Destructive force #3.
Failure.

Is it my lack of confidence? Probably.
Mental preparedness and ability to focus? Probably.

So.. how do you battle and destroy this sort of headgame?

Until next time..
